Near Pair Italian Majolica Candle Sticks.

Description

Near pair of Majolica Italian candlesticks in the form of gryphons.Both
perched atop a star painted globe wearing crowns and holding shields and
inscribed with the Medici family emblem. Some minor variations in style
between the pair. 19th century.
The candlesticks are signed with the figure of a rooster which is the
signature of Ulisse Cantagalli.
Ulisse Cantagalli (1839-1901) an Italian pottery producer in Florence,
Grand Duchy of Tuscany. He was born into a family of potters. The Cantagalli
name having been associated with ceramics since the 15th cenrury. One of his
decorated plates can be found at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY.
