19th Century Italian Coup-Poseidon

Description

This stunning earthenware (Majolica) Italian coup dates from the 19th
century and is decorated with stormy ocean scenes with Amphitrite and
Poseidon holding his trident and dolphins. The handles are like mermaid
figures.
Extract from Britannica:
Poseidon chose Amphitrite from among her sisters as the Nereids performed
a dance on the isle of Naxos. Refusing his offer of marriage, she fled to
Atlas, from whom she was retrieved by a dolphin sent by Poseidon.
Amphitrite then returned, and becoming Poseidon’s wife, he rewarded the
dolphin by making it a constellation.
Size: 19.75 by 10.75 by 10.75 inches.( 50 by 27 by 27 cm.). Very large.
